About the workshop

The Faculty of Economics, South Asian University, New Delhi cordially invites you to attend a two-day Workshop on Economic Theory and Empirics. This workshop intends to introduce students and practitioners to core concepts in microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics in a detailed manner. The idea is to ensure that those who apply economics in their research work should know the underlying theoretical and empirical tools from first principles.

 

Who is this workshop for?

The target audience for this workshop are undergraduate college teachers, young faculty at the university departments, post-graduate students, research scholars in the early stages of research as well as practitioners, such as bureaucrats. We also welcome researchers who are not economists themselves but who apply the economic concepts in their research to join us in this workshop to deepen their understanding of the material.

 

Key Workshop Presenter

Anjan Mukherji ( This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) is currently, Professor Emeritus at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning (CESP) in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He taught at JNU from 1973 and retired as the RBI Professor of Economic Theory at the CESP in 2010. In between, on leaves of absence from JNU, he also taught at LSE, Cornell University, and the University of Tsukuba in Japan. Subsequent to retirement from JNU, Prof. Mukherji has held the position of Country Director of the International Growth Centre (IGC) programme in Bihar from 2010 its inception, to March 31, 2017. His research efforts have been recognized by Fellowships at the Institute of Social and Economic Research, Osaka University during 2002-03 and post retirement from JNU, he was recognized as the Jawaharlal Nehru National Fellow of the ICSSR, 2011-13. During 2011-17, he was also Honorary Visiting Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, New Delhi. His areas of interest and research are mainly in Economic Theory. Prof. Mukherji has published papers in the areas of Economic Dynamics, General Equilibrium Theory, Development Economics, Governance and related issues.

Detailed content

Day 1

  • General Equilibrium Theory: An Overview (Resource Person: Dr. Debdatta Saha, Faculty of Economics, South Asian University)

  • Prof. Anjan Mukherji’s lecture on some issues in general equilibrium theory with an application

  • Macroeconomic applications: When do Welfare Theorems Fail? (Resource Person: Dr. Soumya Datta, Faculty of Economics, South Asian University)

Day 2

Time Series Analysis: Stationarity, Co-integration, Vector Error Correction and Vector Auto-Regression models, Impulse Response Functions, Variance Decomposition Analysis

(Resource Person: Prof. Arup Mitra, Faculty of Economics, South Asian University)

Day 2

Lab Session: Using E-Views for time-series analysis; introduction to the software and detailed tutorial for advanced operations on it. (Resource Person: Dr. Prakash, Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Institute of Economic Growth, New Delhi)
